John DeDakis Write to Heal
KEYNOTE SPEAKER / WORKSHOP LEADER
Grief is part of life, whether it’s the loss of a job, a pet, a friendship, innocence, health, or a loved one. I’ve experienced my share of loss, including the suicide of my sister and my youngest son’s fatal heroin overdose.
I inspire people struggling with grief to effectively use the writing tools of journaling and storytelling to find clarity, purpose, meaning, and a future filled with hope—and even joy.
"John is so vulnerable and open with his struggles and losses. He shows how to take grief and mold it into art." ~Maliha Balala, The Writer’s Center, Bethesda, Maryland

Writing to heal
This is my appearance on the "Step Up to the Mic" podcast hosted by Rory Paquette. For the first 15 minutes or so, I deliver an ad-libbed version of my standard talk on how I've used writing as a way to heal from grief. In the second half of the podcast, Rory follows up with questions of his own for me about the material I covered.
Keynotes
FROM JOURNALIST TO NOVELIST
(OR HOW I LEARNED TO START MAKING IT UP):From newsroom to novels, this keynote reveals how I used real-life tragedy and reinvention to fuel powerful storytelling—and how your own personal plot twists can, too.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO OBJECTIVITY?: How did journalists become the enemy? I unpack the rise of fake news and what you can do to restore truth and trust in a polarized world. FACING FEARWhen we’re about to do something that matters, fear is the fulcrum between cowardice and courage. This keynote explores how to harness your fears and move forward with confidence.
